Radical music site overhaul

Posted in Doctor Who Theme, Music, Site News on October 9th, 2009 by Danny Stewart – View Comments

I’m pleased to announce a very significant overhaul to my music site. If you haven’t been there in a while, I highly recommend that you take another look.

Here are a few of the changes:

  • New track! Not a huge addition, but I’ve added an extended version of J.J. Abrams’s theme music from Fringe. I’m a big fan of Fringe and I really like the theme music, so I made an extended version of it (seeing as I’d already recreated the original several months ago).
  • Old music reposted. A while ago, I made the decision to take down some of my original music in case I decided to reuse it for my album. I’ve changed my mind about this now. If anything currently posted does end up making it to my album, it’ll be so different that there won’t be any harm in leaving the original online. I don’t have much original music available, so I feel like I should leave as much of it up on my site as I can. You’ll find my old music posted under a new album titled Our Last Sunset.
  • Better Doctor Who organization. I’ve broken my Doctor Who themes into three separate albums: Themes and Remixes, for my original mixes, Dominic Glynn Remixes for remixes of Dominic Glynn’s theme, and New Series Mixes for anything based on Murray Gold’s era.
  • New album art for my Doctor Who themes. Pretty self-explanatory. I designed a brand new cover for each of my new albums. I hope you’re as happy with them as I am.

What’s still to come:

  • More older original music (maybe). If I can scrounge up some more original music from the past few years, I’ll be posting it under Our Last Sunset.
  • More Doctor Who themes. I have several more Doctor Who themes that I can put up. As soon as I can get the mixes together, I’ll be posting those to the site as well.
  • Some old unused themes for Doctor Who aliens. A set of themes I wrote a few years ago for various Doctor Who aliens (Sontarans, Rutans, the Master, etc.). These were for a production a friend was working on, but were ultimately never used.

I hope you guys like the changes. Please download away—all the music is free, as always.

Music site streamlined

Posted in Music, Site News on September 7th, 2009 by Danny Stewart – View Comments

I’ve streamlined my music site a bit after looking at some of my stats — namely, I’ve completely removed the payment system on all my tracks. Not only has no one ever paid for anything, but with the exception of the Doctor Who and Fringe tracks, none of my music has ever been downloaded at all. Hopefully having more direct access to the music will encourage more any downloads.

Just for the record, all of my music has always been available to everyone at no cost (and at the highest quality). However the way Bandcamp does it makes it look like you have to pay for it, by shoving a box in your face that says “How much do you want to pay for this track?” Even with the text on the side that said “no minimum,” I’m not sure it was very intuitive to force people to enter “0″ to start the download.

So now I’ve just turned off the payment system completely. Just head over to the track (or album) that you want, click Download, enter your email address, and you’ll get a link to the goods. No fuss of any kind about payment. And if you really do like what you hear enough to want to throw a few bucks my way, there’s now a small Donate button on my contact page so you can still do that. (And if you do, you are forever awesome in my book.)

I hope you enjoy the music. That’s really the most important thing to me, and it’s why I never attempted to force people into paying for anything (even higher quality). I’m sorry if that wasn’t clear prior to now. But if you want, please head over to the music page now and download as much as you’d like.

Thanks.

Gears are turning

Anyone heading over to my music page is bound to notice a small but significant change. All of my old music has been removed from the site. All I can tell you is that this is the smallest of signs that the gears of my album are beginning to turn. I’ve finally started (and I emphasize started) putting together the pieces of what will eventually become my album.

Two of the tracks that were up on the site previously will likely make it to the album (albeit in a heavily altered form), while the other two are likely closed forever. They may see re-release at some point, or they may not. Which ones are which I’ll leave to you to try and work out.

I’d like to keep as much of this album under wraps as I can, but at the same time I want to let people know when progress is being made.

And, well, gears are turning. It’s not much. But it is something.

Some site updates

Posted in Music, Site News on September 3rd, 2009 by Danny Stewart – View Comments

I’ve just updated a few things around the site. For one, there’s a new downloads section on the site where I’ll post some small goodies for people to download. The first thing I’ve put up there is my collection of Doctor Who ringtones. I’ve built up quite a collection for myself over the years and thought I’d share what I had with anyone else who was interested in having a bit more Doctor Who on their phone. (Personally, I have each theme assigned to a different person so I can tell who’s calling purely based on which theme is playing without looking at my phone.) Click here or just click on Downloads in the navbar up top to check it out.

Second, I just finished whipping up a new logo (and accompanying color scheme) for my music site. I was inspired after a close friend of mine, Illusionist Lynx, launched his own page on Bandcamp. He’s done some really cool things and he’s just getting started, so you definitely will want to keep an eye on his page there.

And finally, I rewrote some of my Music page in an effort to make things a bit more efficient and readable. I hope you enjoy the updates.

EDIT: Hot on the heels of the above updates, I’ve also added a new Development page (accessible via the navbar). It currently contains a few AppleScripts I’ve written, but hopefully one day it will expand to include Mac and iPhone apps as well. ;)

Wall of Shadows

I’m pleased to be able to announce the general availability of Wall of Shadows, the short film I recently scored for my good friend Adam Gillikin’s school project.

Three life-long prisoners are hooked up to several machines in a strange room. One is released and shown the world.

I hope you enjoy the film, and my score for it. Don’t forget that the full score is available for download here. You can follow Adam’s other work via his Facebook page and Twitter feed.
